Sony FDR-AX100 Review

Review

The Sony AX100 is a high-quality 4K camcorder with several pro-like features.  It records 4K video at 30FPS but also records 1080P HD and several lesser settings.  Check the product link below for more specifics.  What has impressed me the most about the Sony AX100 is the small but not too small size. The case of the camera is very durable.  It feels more well built structurally than my “prosumer” Canon XA10 camcorder that it is replacing.  Although it does not have XLR ports, there is a Sony accessory available that will mount on the proprietary shoe mount to add XLR functionality. The Sony stereo mic is a must! It pulls its power from the camera’s shoe and provides excellent audio quality for an affordable price. The Carl Zeiss lens in very sharp and although the lens is not swappable, lens filters can be screwed on to the end of it. The battery life is incredible and after-market batteries from Wasabi Power can extend the already excellent batter life even more. It does not have built-in memory but it does have an SD card slow. SDXC cards rated class 10 or higher must be used for 4K recording. I wish that it has two SD card slots like the Canon XA10 that I’m replacing but the amount of 4K video that can be recorded even on a smaller 64GB SDXC card is incredible! I perform all of my edits within Final Cut Pro X on my iMac with Retina 5K Display computers. In synchs right up to import the video but be sure that the USB Connection is correct(please see my video below in regards to importing Sony AX100 video into Final Cut Pro X). This camera is a real bargain. It comes with a lens hood, wall charger, extended USB cable for charging/synching and an HDMI cable. Sony definitely did not skimp on these small items that most other camera would require the owner to purchase separately. I wish that this camcorder did 4K at 60FPS but the 4K at 30FPS is fine considering the price. It also has built-in ND filters and that something that is usually only present on camcorders costing much more.
