Akitio Thunder2 Quad Enclosure Review

The Akitio Thunderbolt 2 external hard drive enclosure is a great way to attach up to four hard drives externally via a Thunderbolt cable. Multiple enclosures can be daisy-chained to add even more storage capacity. I use this enclosure in conjunction with an iMac with Retina 5K Display computer for storing massive amounts of 4K videos. It’s plenty fast to work from directly within Final Cut Pro X or other video editing app. I use the concatenated disk set option within Disk Utility to create what appears to MacOS X to be one large drive that is actually multiple smaller drives. By using that configuration, it’s simple to add more physical disks (and/or additional daisy-chained enclosures) to increase disk space as needed. This enclosure is very well made and looks nice on my desk alongside my iMac computer. It produces a negligible amount of noise and heat. Adding additional disks is as simple as powering off the unit, removing the front cover and inserting a disk within one of the four disk sleds. The top handle is nice if you are in a shared workspace and wish to carry the enclosure home with you to better protect your data.
